Orchestra & Band

All 4th and 5th grade students learn a musical instrument either in orchestra or band. Beginning in the 4th grade, WCA students may choose to learn a string instrument in orchestra or a wind, brass, or percussion instrument in band. Orchestra and band instruction continues with 5th grade music reading, music theory, and learning basic efficiency in musical performance on the selected instrument. The 4th and 5th grade classes comprise the Elementary String Orchestra and the Elementary Band. The 6th, 7th, and 8th grade classes perform in the Middle String Orchestra and the Concert Band.

Elementary String Orchestra

The Elementary String Orchestra is composed of 4th and 5th grade string students who learn to proficiently play either violin, viola, cello, or bass individually and in an orchestral setting. This class builds upon the early elementary music instruction introducing playing fundamentals and technique, reading music, and performance of musical pieces. Students are expected to practice daily and are required to attend two evening performances during the school year. Additional private lessons are available also on campus after school. Orchestra or band are mandatory for all 4th and 5th grade WCA students.

Middle School String Orchestra

The Middle School String Orchestra is for grades 6th through 8th and requires at least one year of previous string instruction. The middle school strings program moves students into the intermediate level playing and develops the understanding of music theory, and advanced key signatures. More challenging musical scores are learned and performed in preparation for high school orchestra. While voluntary, students who play violin, viola, cello or bass are strongly encouraged to enroll. Students are expected to practice daily and are required to attend two evening performances during the school year. Additional private lessons are available on campus after school.

Elementary Band

The Elementary Band teaches 4th and 5th grade students to proficiently play either flute, oboe, clarinet, French horn, trumpet, trombone or percussion individually and in a band setting. This class builds upon the early elementary music instruction introducing playing fundamentals and technique, reading music, and performance of musical pieces. Students are expected to practice daily and are required to attend two evening performances during the school year. Additional private lessons are highly encouraged and are available on campus. Band or orchestra are mandatory for all 4th and 5th grade WCA students.

Concert Band

Our 6th through 8th classes may participate in our concert band which requires at least one year of previous instruction on a wind, brass or a percussion instrument. The middle school band program moves students into the intermediate level playing and develops the understanding of music theory and advanced key signatures.
